Gematria is an ancient system of numerology which assigns numerical value to a person's name or phrase in order to gain insight into the individual or topic. This technique, which has been popular with religious scholars for centuries, is still used as a form of divination or fortune-telling today.
Through gematria, numbers are given symbolic meaning based on their sound and shape. The numbers that emerge from words can then be interpreted to provide insight into a particular individual or situation. For example, one way gematria works is by associating each letter of the alphabet (or other symbols) with its corresponding numeric value. Hebrew, Greek and Latin alphabets each have their own associated numeric value chart. When someone's name (or other phrase) is written out in letters corresponding to these numeric values and then added up, the sum provides information pertaining to the person's personality traits and areas of expertise.
Similarly, those wanting a more exacting interpretation may add both the literal and numerical interpretations together in an equation called "Magic Square Gematria" - an age-old form of gematria that assigns numbers to entire phrases rather than single letters. This practice aims to explore themes or issues within a particular text using numerology as its basis for analysis. For instance if someone is looking for insight into how two people perceive each other, they may first assign each letter in their names a number (according to their respective alphabets), then multiply those two sums together to get the full picture.
